Demetri Martin’s “These Are Jokes” @ The Village Theater

Nov. 3, 2005
“When I was in law school, people were so not passionate about what they were doing. I think that was such a bummer. But then comedians, a lot of them didn’t even finish school and, like, a lot of them are dropouts, but they’re completely immersed. They’re obsessed. They love it. It’s such a difference. It’s all desire — desire and persistence. It has nothing to do with the other stuff.”
–Demetri Martin on NPR, July 2004 & Gelf intervew, May 2005.

Ah-da-da-da-da-da-da … Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa

So, basically every quality moment I’ve ever spent on the Internet since 1994 can be distilled into these 88 seconds. After scouring the nearly 500 comments (so far), I’m to believe the language spoken here is Tamil, and that the song on the boombox is the 1986 international superhit “Holiday Rap” by MC Miker G and DJ Sven. But when the diminutive pop-locker jumps back into frame, I, personally, believe he’s saying: “Hey, man, let me have a drag.” And the lazy, layabout son says: “Hey, man, you’re a kid. I could get in trouble” To which the pop-locker replies, “To Hell with that. I’m no kid. You think some kid could dance like that?” And the guy says, “Really?” And the pop-locker says, “Sheeeeit, you better ask somebody.” And the guy goes, “A’ight, den. Hit this.” And the pop-locker laughs (and, oh yes, that’s his real laugh), and maybe, just maybe, the “Pshooop” sound-effect matching the exhale is just about the greatest ending in YouTube history. Oh yeah, and the kid in the blue bowling shirt and the subcontinental mullet is pretty much top shelf, too.
Triumph is having …

…and something I think is equal parts cool and funny.
“Nope, I don’t need no Internet. No sir, not in my life.”

“Allow me to explain the contamination process:
Pinecones go in here. Party liquors come out here,
and proceed to here. Fights begin. Fingerprints
are took. Days is lost. Bail is made.
Court dates are ignored. Cycle is repeated.”

The Stepfathers: Freckles Gets a Beating @ The UCB

In improv, you’re often taught to “have fun” or “enjoy yourself” onstage — the idea being that if you’re having fun in your scene, chances are high the audience will, too. But I also think having fun isn’t really something that can be measured, especially not by the built-in laugh-o-meter that resides in your head. I think that once you can rewire your brain to understand that there should not be a causal relationship between having fun and getting laughs, then things are more likely to fall in place on a regular basis. Or something.
