There’s something poetic about a stuffed monkey airborne and arching backwards, recoiling from the business end of another stuffed monkey’s puñazo. “Do you know what ‘nemesis’ means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this case by an ‘orrible cunt — me.” (Alan Ford as “Bricktop”). Demetri Martin @ The UCB

March 27, 2006
This blurry photo of Demetri Martin was taken during his first workshop performance of “Dr. Earnest Parrot Presents Demetri Martin.” It is also the exact moment the infrared light on my camera caught his attention. Demetri had sold out all four of his 11 p.m. shows at the UCB, a clear sign that he was, and always has been, well on his way to earning his spot in the record books reserved for Dreamers. Regarding the show, which he would later present at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this particular Scotsman wanted a little more, apparently. And if you don’t know who Demetri Martin is, you soon will.

Up for Adoption @ Mo Pitkins House of Satisfaction

Sept. 4, 2006
“North degree 50 and sideways degree 42.” A few of my improv peeps opened for The Society Club at Mo Pitkins on Monday night. This was their first time in front of a predominantly non-improv audience, and they did very well. I cannot lie — not all of it was great, but most of it was. And when the lights went out, ending the set, the house applauded for quite some time. I thought they did a great job, and I was at once both happy and jealous. All that said, though, they’re still just a bunch of improv nerds like me. Bitches!
The Book Club Presents Fast Food Nation @ The PIT

Aug. 28, 2006
Earlier this week, I got lucky and caught the last installment of The Book Club‘s 4-week run at the PIT. These guys (Candler Budd, Christina Casa, John Coburn, Alan Harris, Walter Murphy, Jill Peirez and Annie Scott) are really good. According to them: “The Book Club creates long form improvisation that eschews audience suggestion in favor of a well-known literary work” or “a bunch of improv nerds who can’t keep their heads out of a good book.” Continue reading
Sean Conroy’s Level 2 Graduation Show @ The UCB (2nd set)

June 1, 2003
A few weekends ago, I caught The Project at the PIT. My old L1 classmate Kirk (above in black pants), who I hadn’t seen in donkey’s ears, was throwing down some outstanding improv with his team, The Ghosty Teens (Cartoon Mystery). After the show, I said hello and immediately praised his skill-set, referring to him as “a pro.” He replied modestly, “Nah, I’m just having fun,” which is truly the best response. Even more interesting, I recognize two other players in this class show photo who now perform with Trophy Dad.
