My siblings and I took their kids to the rock jetties where my mom used to take us crab fishing when we were little. It was fun passing the tradition onto them, albeit with less success (that’s our only keeper). This was my first trip back home since Hurricane Ike battered the island back in September. Our annual family vacation in Galveston always begins the same way — we jump in the pool as soon as we arrive from the airport. By late afternoon, goggles and floaties lay scattered around the pool and wet swim trunks and towels hang from a clothesline in the backyard. To me, swimming has always signified summer, and I am thankful that Galveston has begun her slow recovery, and that I still have a home to return to. I’m also grateful for my family and the time I get to spend with them.
